    1. (View - Grid from the dropdown menu)
  3. Set your preferences to a GRIDLINE EVERY 100 PIXELS with 2 SUBDIVISIONS
    1. Edit - Preferences Grid
    2. Notice that there are dark gridlines every 100 "pixels" and light gridlines every 50

2. Make a Face
  1. Create a new Layer and call it "Face"
    1. Look for the LAYERS palette in the bottom right corner of the screen
    2. Hover over the buttons there until you find the one that lets you "Create a new layer"
    3. Double click on the label "layer 1" and change it to "Face"
  2. Use the "Elliptical Marquee" tool to select a circle in the very center of the canvas
    1. Hover over the tools in the top LEFT side of the screen until you find the one called "Rectangular Marquee Tool" (it's located below the eyedropper tool)
    2. Click and hold on it until it lets you select the "Elliptical Marquee tool"
    3. Use teh gridlines and drag a circle so it's exactly 200 pixels wide and 200 pixels tall. If it isn't exactly in the center, you can drag and move it so it is
  3. Paint it Yellow
    1. Choose a yellow colour by clicking the "Set Foreground Colour" tool at the bottom left side of the screen, and adjusting the colour to yellow
    2. Be sure you're on the FACE layer and fill the circle with yellow by using either:

4. Make a Mouth
  1. Create a new layer and name it "MOUTH"
  2. Make a an oval selection right in the MIDDLE BOTTOM of the face
  3. Fill it in with black, but don't deselect it just yet
  4. Drag just the selection circle up (but don't move the black oval)
  5. Hit the delete key to carve away the top part of the oval - that should leave a smile on your face!
  6. Use the MOVE tool and grab one of the corner "handles" to transform the mouth - shrink, rotate, squeeze to customize it

5. Enhance the Illustration
  1. Use Layer Styles to add beveled edges, dropshadows, overlays etc
    1. Layer Styles are among the effects found in the top right corner of the screen
    2. Double click a style to impose it on the current layer
    3. To erase a layer style, locate it's icon in the actual layer (bottom right on the screen) you can right mouse click it and "clear layer style"
  2. Try to restrain yourself - the idea is to make the image look stylish, but not gaudy!
